Uncover This: Directories and Phone Books

What did your great, great aunt do for a living here in Cincinnati and what was her address right after she moved out of her parents’ house? What was your best friend's phone number in 1983?

Find out by searching our large collection of directories and phone books! At the Downtown Main Library’s Genealogy & Local History Department, use these resources to track relatives’ whereabouts to as early as 1819! You’ll also find Williams' Cincinnati City Directories digitized and fully text-searchable through 1955 on CHPL's Digital Library.

Exclusive Cincinnati Enquirer Photo

At the top of every newsletter, we'll include an image from the Cincinnati Enquirer Photo Archive that hasn't yet been uploaded to CHPL's Digital Library. Think of it as an "exclusive early access" bonus for Cincinnati history nerds. 🤓

About the image above: When people think about the high death toll from the 1937 flood, they often believe that the initial flooding claimed the most lives. However, it was actually sickness from polluted water and remediation efforts that caused the most damage.

In the image above, a man is sitting in a boat while repairing equipment. His expression is best explained by looking at a word written on the back of the photo by the Enquirer photographer.

Electric written in cursive

This city was put back together by some very, very brave individuals.
